Rosemary Humphries - Fine Artist
I have painted all my life, but gave up the ‘day-job’
3 years ago to throw myself into it – a great decision!
My aim is communication through painting, with light and
feeling in the work. I work mainly in watercolour and oil,
being particularly interested in the uses of colour and in
using the medium to speak for itself in the work. For watercolour
for example, I mix colours on the paper, letting the water
work its magic on my colours.
I am working on responding to landscape in terms of the shapes
and colours which are unique to certain areas, and then using
these convey the spirit of the subject. The shapes found in
natural objects fascinate me and I use their ideas to develop
patterns in my work.
Light fascinates me, and I spend a lot of time observing
and sketching its effects. I am working on pushing abstraction
while maintaining the strength of reality in my work.
I feel that in a world of increasing turmoil, the landscape
is still paramount and allows us to rediscover some faith
in continuity of nature and beauty around us.
In 1996, I won a Highly Commended Award from Alwyn Crawshaw
in a competition run by the Haste Gallery in Ipswich.
I achieved a BA from the Open University, studying while
enjoying bringing up my two boys, fitting in part-time work
and still finding time to paint.

- Teaching, Demonstrations, Workshops and Mixed Themes
I am experienced running workshops, lessons on one-to-one
or group basis, demonstrations to clubs. Adults and children
of all ages – CRB check in place.
Wide variety of topics, putting heart into work, extracting
from subjects, drawing in various media to create a variety
of work, simple but successful colour theory. Many painting
techniques and media are approached, using inks, watercolour,
pastel, oil, acrylic, working to bring inspiration and originality
to work.
I am happy working personally, or with large groups, at
home or I am happy to travel to venues/homes. (subject to
addition of travel costs)
I have studio space at home for 5-6 pupils, at my home in
the countryside with open fields around. Projects have been
done with primary schools and I have been Artist in Residence
at a preparatory school, working with 6-13 year olds on dedicated
projects. References are available.
I am planning a short course combining Painting/drawing
with Art History and themed Food. A Spanish theme will start,
looking at Spanish work, creating our own, and with breaks
for Tapas lunch! Future plans include bird identification
and drawing, patterns in trees, local walks.
All projects considered - Fine art and modern art lessons
for schools. Individual teaching and tutoring for adults
and children.
