Brackenbury

Summer Evening from Brackenbury

The spaces and shapes created by the late evening light, the shingle spit and the shapes and tones of the huts interested me, and the way the sea ‘glows’ with light late in the day

Pines near Ramsholt

Pines Near Ramsholt Panorama

I have been exploring this scene, seeing how different washes of colour work. Water is important where I let the colours create their own mixes by blending when wet.

Punts at Cambridge

Punts at Cambridge

The abstract shapes and using colour as tone are the main components here. I painted the work from sketches turned upside down, to paint purely the shapes and colours, not putting right way up again until very late on.

'Four Candles'

Sea Urchin II

I have done 2 studies of this shell, experimenting with the effects of light. Here the light comes from 2 imaginary sources. It is also an exercise in the rigidity of the use of tone to create light and design in the overall work.

Underwoods

'Four Candles', no problem

This is our local DIY store, which sells everything! The shapes created by the jumble of ‘stuff’ and the reflections of the street opposite in the glass creates abstract interest. This is another work which I worked on from ‘upside down’ images, to focus on the shapes.

Yellow Flag Patterns

Patterns in nature interest me and developing a drawing creates shapes unique to the plant you are involved with, in this case interlocking triangles.

Nastursiums

This was painted to explore the vertical format of twice as tall as wide. I wanted to concentrate attention of the abstract shapes and vivid yellow green of the leaves placed in the top ‘golden section’ of the work.

Giant Clam

Giant Clam

The patterns and structure in nature and unbeatable, aptly shown by the powerful swirls in this giant clam, to be found in Ipswich Museum. I intend to develop these patterns into more abstract ideas.

Museum Entrance, Ipswich

Museum Entrance, Ipswich

On leaving Ipswich Museum after a productive sketching trip, I was captivated by the light and abstract shapes in the hall. The light of the doorway makes a centrepiece. I painted it totally in shapes, using Braque as an inspiration.

The Survivors

The Survivors

I have painted this group of trees over and over since 1987. After the storm, the forest near Woodbridge, Suffolk was devastated. However, some trees still stood in the midst of the damage, which is why I call them ‘The Surviviors’.

  Hollelsey Common, Soft Light

Hollelsey Common, Soft Light

Another work from my favourite woodland near Woodbridge, Suffolk. I was inspired by the composition created by the bright light framed by the different species of trees, the twisted birches being a particular characteristic of this woodland.

Erosion, Valley of Desolation, Yorkshire

Erosion, Valley of Desolation, Yorkshire

There is a wonderful walk from Wharfedale in Yorkshire up to Simon’s Seat. This goes up this delightful secret valley, which was stripped of trees by a storm a long time ago. It’s stark beauty and tumbling rocks led me to capture their shapes and atmosphere.
