My work covers a range of subjects but always something that makes me buzz. I look at shapes and colour ideas, individual to every place and theme.
‘Blythburgh’ and ‘Covehithe’ oils
Acrylic underpainting in strong colours with oil final painting. I looked at the strong compositional shapes of the East Suffolk coast landscape showing the open estuary and the eroding coast.
Houses of Parliament from Millbank
I had just visited the Peter Doig show at Tate Britain, and saw the trees and traffic lights with the light of the building behind while walking to Westminster. I loved his show and his view of the world affected how I saw this.
Light And Life, Brighouse Bus Station
Strong light/shape/restricted colour. This is about the dross of rubbish, graffiti contrasted with the immaculately dressed elderly lady, complete with shiny brooches and buttoned shoes.
LIGHT AND LIFE, BRIGHOUSE BUS STATION
- See how it was done in stages.
Cannon Street Station
An abstracted painting – all shapes of the buildings and cranes. Fun with a few bold colours. The station looks striking from the South Bank.
Ben Britten Sea Interlude No 1
Benjamin Britten could not have written this wonderful piece from the opera Peter Grimes without living with the sound of the wind in the reeds, the wild coast and sea of this evocative coast.
The Judges
Askrigg Horticultural Show cake judging (and sampling!). Freely drawn pencil seemed the best way to show these wonderful ladies.
The Sea Urchin
I found this shell, and saw it casting wonderful shadows in the sun. So I placed it with 2 sources of light. Very limited colour makes the viewer really ‘look’.
