Rosemary Humphries - Artist

I am exploring my responses to landscape and nature in terms of the shapes and colours unique to certain places and ideas.

Questions are asked; - how does this area say 'Northumberland' for instance? What are the colours of the bedrock? How deep is the sea; what colour light is reflected from it over the whole landscape? What makes these marshes so lonely? How do you paint the feeling of a slight breeze lifting your spirits? This building is man-made, but the light is the main component, not man - how do I show that?

The Shapes found in natural objects fascinate me and I use their ideas to develop patterns in my work. I get to know my subject. Everything has its unique pattern and I must be faithful to that. Using that pattern reinforces its spirit through the link from object to my brain/hand to paper and out to the viewer's eye and brain. I want to make that chain work successfully.

Design and elements of composition are vital to me. Careful placing of shapes and colours directs my viewer to important elements of a painting.

I feel that in a world of increasing turmoil, the landscape is still paramount and allows us to rediscover some faith in continuity of nature and beauty around us.

As much as possible, I visit exhibitions at all levels. I glean influences widely, taking pencil and paper to galleries to work out principles of composition in works that 'hit' me.

Among the many influences, are, John Sell Cotman, Henri Matisse, Paul Klee, Christopher Wood, Jasper Johns and Gustav Klimt's landscapes.

Tuition: My methods give a fun and simple way of looking at colour, drawing and various techniques. My aim is to show how to enhance and develop work without losing individuality.

In 1996, I won a Highly Commended Award from Alwyn Crawshaw in a competition run by the Haste Gallery in Ipswich.

I achieved a BA from the Open University, studying while enjoying bringing up my two boys, fitting in part-time work and still finding time to paint.
